How to Keep Your Gas Lawn Mower Running Like New

A little regular maintenance goes a long way toward keeping a gas mower reliable season after season. Here’s a simple routine to follow.

Change the Oil Regularly

Most 4-cycle engines, like the Briggs & Stratton motors used in several of our mowers, need an oil change roughly once per season or every 25 hours of use.

Sharpen or Replace the Blade

A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leaving your lawn ragged and more prone to disease. Sharpen the blade at least once a season, and replace it if it’s bent or heavily worn.

Clean or Replace the Air Filter

A clogged air filter reduces power and fuel efficiency. Check it every few mows during peak season and replace it at the start of each year.

Use Fresh Fuel

Old, stale gas is one of the most common reasons mowers won’t start. Use fresh fuel each season, and add a stabilizer if the mower will sit unused for more than a month.

Clean the Deck After Each Use

Grass clippings that build up under the deck trap moisture and cause rust. A quick rinse or scrape after mowing keeps the deck in better shape long-term.

Following this routine can add years to your mower’s life. And if your current machine is past the point of easy repair, our gas mower lineup includes options for every yard size and budget.
